The Nisenan have inhabited this land for many thousands of years before the onset of the Gold Rush, the statehood of California and the creation of Nevada County. Tribal Chairman Richard Johnson’s book details the tribes customs, lifestyle, tools, entertainment & homes. Additionally, he writes of the difficulty maintaining the customs/culture of the tribe, the illegal termination of the tribes federal status & the loss of their Nevada City Rancheria land.
